12.17.09 The last whole week has been just so cold!! BRRRRR!! I went outside to get ready to go to school when I almost sliped on the ice, then some where in that week it was so foggy, this week it started raining, this remined me of the change phases of matter, how there are different types of matter, solid (ice), liquid (rain), gas/ condensation(fog), and plasma!! I had seen it with my own eyes, how changes of matter happened in the real world, and I saw the way they happened. I think that if I look extra hard I can find more, like Ice cream, for my birthday we had ice cream cake, and it was cold outside, brrrr :D, after a few seconds it had turned from a solid(ice cream) to a liquid (melted ice cream), and these two are only some examples, from the million that there are out there in the world, I LOVE SCIENCE, AND HOW I CAN EXPIRIENCE IT!!!

Today it was raining quit a while, I was outside of my apartments and I was sliding on the grass it was just so slippery!!! Then I tried it on the sement but I FELL!!! :D I remembered how friction plays a big role everywhere, FYI Friction is created when two objects rub against eachother, this causes it to slow down or speed up, for example the grass had a little bit of friction that is why I slipped with ease, but on the cement had a lot of friction so I came to an abrutly stop and fell to the ground, I see many things in the reall world and one of them was FRICTION!!

Today during class my binder was on the desk but half of it was over the edge, then in a few sceonds it fell over. This very much reminded me about potential and kenetic energy. My binder had Potential energy when half of it was on the desk and the other half was in the air, because it had a potential to fall, but the instant before it hit the ground it had the most kenetic energy. Now that I open my eyes I see that potential and kenetic energy are all around us, when you turn a carr on, when you are ontop of a wet slippery hill, when you are walking on ice, when you are standing on top of a chair, and when you jump of a chair, it is all around us, all we have to do is open our eyes.

The other day I was practicing basketbal and just having fun when I slipped on the ground, I was so confused when this happned, then I noticed that I wasn't wearing my basketbal shoes, these shoes have not grips, Ms.Piehl and Ms.Roach were talking about how you needed grips so you wouldn't slip. Because this all has to do with FRICTION, if my shoes have no grips it reduces friction, and grips increase frictionso that I don't slip all over the place. I feel so happy that by just thinking for a little while I can connect science into the reall world, I can figure a lot of mystries just by thinking.

Cooking, cooking, cooking, I was cooking with my little sister, and baking a cake, fun fun. My little sister grabed an egg to put into the mixture, but she dropped it, SPLAT!! It crashed against the ground. "Araceli why did the egg crash to the ground and didn't float" this was a simple and obvious question, but I guess for a little girl like her it was complicated. "Nanis, there is a force the you can't see called gravity, it pulls things to the center of the earth like a magnet, that is why you and me aren't floating up into the air, gravity keeps us stuck to the ground, that is another reason why we can't fly. :P" She kind of seemed to understand, and said "sure" and just kept cooking. :) :D

When I play basketbal a lot of girls try to make baskets, I look at the way they throught he ball, sometimes they do make it and sometimes they don't. I've noticed that it all depend on how they push and throw the ball to the basket. They make a big arch to make it into the basket, sometimes the arch is to flat and it doesn't make it through; sometimes the arch is to big and it hits the back board or it it goes over the backbaord. I see that it needs a medium arch not to large and not to small. It all depends on how much force and energy to use to push and throw the ball, you need to limit and measure the amount you use so you can make a basket. I have seen this and practice it, now every time I go up to make a basket I remember these thoughts and images I have had. SWOOSH!!!!

this summer when me and my family went to the beach we had a lot of fun. I took my shoes off, and noticed that my feet started hurting because of all the big rocks, the closer I got to the water the smaller the rocks got, until it was thin and smooth sand. I remembered about erosion and weathering, how all tthe waves were hitting the rocks so much that it eventually broke down to a lot of tiny pieces. I noticed that the sand wasn't all just brown, it was a mixture of something else, shells, the water had not only broken down the rocks, but shells too, weathering is a process that takes a while, but it will eventually happen. That is how cannions are made, the river runs through it for so long, that it weathers it down. :P

When I was sitting doing my home work I noticed how it was getting late and I was having trouble seeing my homework. So I turned on the light, when I did this I saw a lot of shadows being made, it was until know that I came to think about it the scientific way. I knew that there were things in the way that created the shadows, and that was why they were being made, but I remembered how the light has rays, these rays are traveling pretty fast to get to where they are going, making everything seem bright, but since these things are in the way, they are blocking the light rays, they can't get to the other side, there for that side is dark. In other placed the light doesn't reach this is probably because the light rays aren't that powerful to get all the way over there. So that is why there are some places where there is more light than others, and why shadows are created. XD

The other day, me and my sister were bored, we were outside sitting on the grass just rolling a ball to one another. I noticed that every time I rolled the ball to her I made it to her, but when she rolled it I had to reach a little farther to get it. I noticed that the grass was a force acting upon the ball (friction), and since friction was going on I was rolling the ball with more force because I was bigger, I told her to roll it harder, she did, and the ball finally got to me!! I had used science to solve my problem!! :D

I remember when I was like in 2nd grade I decided to plant a bean. I thought it was so cool how it grew, I watered it and left it out in the sun. Later on when I grew up I found out that plants do something that is called photosynthesis, where the plant gets sun rays and water and turns it into a sugary food. If I forgot to water my plant it would wilt and almost dy, but I tried to do that every day,and leave it out in the sun as much as I could, in a couple of weeks it grew a lot, and I had to plant it out side, but if it rains a lot it wilted, so it had to have water but not to much, and if it had to much sun it would wilt to, it had to have the right suff of everything!! Man growing a plant is hard!! XD

I remember last summer how it got sooooo hot, I live in the second floor so all the heat goes up to us. I felt like diving into an icy pool to get all of this heat to go away. I was stading on a chair trying to get some sugar off a cupboard, when I noticed that it was much hotter up here than it was on the ground, so once I noticed this I wanted to expirement something. I got off the chair and layed down on the ground, it was much cooler down here, then I rememberd how heat always rises up to the sky when it is very hot, so the closer to the ground the cooler it was, and the higher to the cieling the hotter it got.

Today something incredible happened, I saw two cars crash!!! Yea I know it's something, I was getting out of my moms van, just getting back from Expanding your Horizons field tript, when...... !!!!BAM!!!, I heard the crash, and saw to carrs seperate from eachother, each going a different direction. There was a black one who seemed to have more damage than the red one. I think that the reason why these two cars bounced off of eachother because, since both of them were going at a pretty high speed, and were both facing the same way when they met into something, all of that energy that was being let out all of a sudden came to a brute stop making the car bounce back to the impact of the obsitcle that it crashed into, I don't know why the black one had more damage than the red one, but OMG, this is the first time I have ever seen a car crash, I hope that everyone was ok!

I don't know the day that this exactly happened but I know that it was somewhere this week. I was hold a cup of tea in the car, my mom was driving we were going to go to fred Meyers, but first we had to go up a huge hill. I started to think that when we went up the hill that the tea was going to start to tilt and spill over so I waited for any sign but nothing happened. I was sure that the van wasn't driving on a straight ground but wasn't sure why the tea wasn't tilting. I asked my mom why this was happening, she told he that If I placed it on the floor of the van that then it would tilt, but since I was holding it, the angle wasn't correct fot the tea to spill, I was very amazed and wanted to know what would happen if I place my cup of tea on the ground not the floor of the van but the ground outside. But I knew that I couldn't do this, but atleast I knew why the tea wasn't spilling over, I was positive that if I did place the cup on the concrete ground that the tea inside would spill.

The other day when I got out of the shower, got dressed, and sat on my couch. I started to noitce that a very very small amount of steam was rising off of my skin. I started to think but why, I don't think I'm that hot!! HAHA, any ways I started to remeber how what hot and cool are meet, it either condenses or evaporates, Then I rememberd that I took a shower with very warm water, the air must be condensing, since the hot air and cold air meat!! The next time I tried to take a shower with as much cold water as possible but not to cold, when I came out my body was still giving out some heat, but I didn't see as much steam as last time!!

I remember that this one day when Bruno, Ruby, and I were heading twoards ms.Roaches room bruno slipped, we all laughed together, asked him if he was ok, and kept going on our way. But why did bruno slip so suddenly? When I was back there later on that day I noticed a very important clue, the floor was wet!! It must have been friction who let Bruno slip and fall, when bruno stepped in the water and started walking on the wet slippery floor he slipped but why did he slip and not Ruby nor I?? I looked at my shoes they had pretty good grips, I bet ruby's did too, but Bruno must have not had good grips and that was why he fell!! Now to put the clues together, I went over to Bruno and asked to look at the bottom of his shoes, aha, I was right, there were barely any grips on his shoes!!!
Case Solved!!!

Yesterday when me and Ruby were at track we were stretching out. I started to remember when one time I forgot to stretch and I pulled a muscle, it was just like starting up a car, you have to warm it up first not just turning it on and start to drive. In the morning you also wake up slowly and turn your brain on slowly not right away. So when we strectch it is just like waring up our muscles, if I don't strectch my muscles hurt and I don't do as well as I usually, so now I just went over a quick why stretching is so important for us to feel well and do well when doing sports. So I just have to remember to stretch everytime I go to track.

Yesterday during track mr.Romine took us into his room to talk about high jumping, and how science has to do everything with it. You cant run straight at it and then jump on it, because you won't give your self enough space to junp with out knocking the pole down, and if you mak a C turn but come in to flat you aren't giving your self enogh moment to jump and turn on your back. Its just like a wistle atached to a string when you are spinning it, it spins and spins, when you stop rotating your wrist is still keeps spinning because of the momentum. Its the same when you are high jumping when you make that C turn your body is getting momentum so when you jump off of the ground, your body is still being pushed back onto the mat!! Just like the whistle on the string!! :D

This Tuesday I presented my Adopt a Godess project, I had Iris Godess of the Rainbow, and messanger of the gods. That day when I went home it started to rain, it was cloudy, but sunny at the same time, it seemed like a dream. Everything seemed like a fantasy, when I went outside I almost shrieked with joy, there was a BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW!! You could see all the colors perfectly fine, it was so pretty. My little sister asked me how a rainbow was made, I told her It was made by Iris, goddess of the rainbow. But inside of me I knew that wasn't true, I knew how it was acutally made, the light waves were being bended. The many water droplets were acting as crystals pyramids breaking up the different waves of the light, therfor creating the rainbow that was beeing seen by me and my little sister. There were so many beautiful colors!! I couldn't believe that the droplets could bend the light for so long, the rainbow lasted for a couple of minutes, I thought it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

During this blog I'm going to talk about shin splints, because that is what is happening to me. I just started track this year, and it is fun but coaches also work us pretty hard. Then I got shin splints, they hurt so bad!!! I thought I was just sore but they wouldn't go away! It just kept hurting every time I ran or jumped, Gaby told me I had Shin splints, I had never heard about that before. I Googled shin splints and found out that it is when the bone and the muscle near the shin separates because of overworking your body, there for making your shin hurt. Mr.Romine told me that the only way to make shin splints go away is to ice them 20 min for about 3 times each night and they will eventually go away. I learned something new about how my body works, and there for connecting science to the real world.

I noticed that yesterdays track meet was AWSOME!! Girls won, and by A LOT!! While I was doing hurdles I noticed something, I felt like I was running much much faster than usual. I got first place in both of my hurdle races, but why was I so fast?? When I looked down at my feet I noticed I was wearing spikes, and I rememberd how the spikes have like spikes at the bottom, if I push my finger against one, it hurt; they were really pointy. I automatically thought about friction; so every time that I took a step the spikes helped me not slide on the dirt and by having these spikes at the bottom it created much less friction. There for letting my body go forward without wasting energy, then making my running seem faster!! I love relationg science to my everyday life!!

The other day I started to notice that multiple people coment that my eyes change color, but I never really noticed that. I thought that my eyes were always blue. I started to wonder why do they change color, what causes this to happen? The first thing that came to mind was the color spectrum rule, about my eyes reflecting the color blue, but then what would make the color change?? I asked ms.Piehl and kept going on into my investigation she started to do some research on her computer that I had already done, but had failed. She figured out that the color change was caused by the amount of protein that was being taken in your body, that made a chemical reaction in your eyes. That was really unexpected I thought that it had to do with something about the color spectrum, but apearently it has to do with protein!!! Wow that was wierd. :D

OMG!! Yesterday was such a good day, Millcreek Track girls won Conference!!! I was so happy, my only event was doing shuttle hurdle. As I was practicing with my spikes on (shoes that help grip onto the ground), when I started slipping, I didn’t get why!! I looked at the bottom of my spikes, and the actual spikes had gone dull, since they were not point anymore they didn't have that much friction there fore slipping on the ground. This wasn't good because if this happened during the actual race it could affect our time seriously. I asked Gabby if she could change the spikes and she did (Gaby is soooo AWSOME!!), once she did this the spikes gripped the ground better than before, when I ran I felt like I was running a little better and faster, because I wasn't slipping as much as before. In the end we almost beat the school record by one second!! But friction was helpful in making this possible!! YAY friction!!!
