1 Definition: Change that takes place when two or more substances (reactantes) interact to form new substances (products)
Kid Friendly: When there are two chemicals and they mix they create a chemical reaction. If two gasses interacted with each other the creates a reaction, a chemical reaction. 2
2 Diagram of a light stick
2Example: The light stick is an example of a chemical reaction. Inside the light stick, there is a vial filled with a solution, which floats inside another solution. When you bend the light stick, the vial containing the first solution cracks and releases the first solution into the second solution. They both mix together. Both solutions cause a chemical reaction when they mix together, creating light.
Remember the Word: To remember what a chemical reactio is you can always think of a glow stick and how it lights up. This way you know the reason behind how the stick glows and you know what goes on inside the stick that creates this reaction.
Non-example: Salt water is not an example of a chemical reaction. There is no new substance that was created when salt and water were combined.
3Synonyms: Chain reaction, cause and effect, domino effect
