Dictionary Definition: The attractive or repulsive force that acts between magnetic materials.
Unknown, . ScienceSaurus. Wilmington, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2006.

Kid Friendly Definition: When two magnets come together or push away from each other, they exhibit magnetic force.

Examples: Put two magnets next to each other. If you bring the North Poles or two like poles close to each other, the magnets will push away or repel each other. If you bring the unlike poles close together, they will attract each other.

Another example is a compass. The Earth behaves like it has a gigantic bar magnet inside of it, with the south end at the North Pole and the north end of the magnet at the South Pole of the Earth. When you use a compass, the needle points towards the North Pole, indicating that the north pole of the compass is being attracted towards the magnetic force exerted by the buried south pole.

Another example would be the Maglev trains in Japan. These trains run using the principle of magnetism and magnetic forces. Maglev is short for magnetic levitation, which means that these trains will float over a guideway using the basic principles of magnets to replace the old steel wheel and track trains.

Additional Info!!!

A magnetic field is a region around a magnet that is affected by the magnetic forces. You can represent the magnetic field of a magnet by drawing field lines between the north and south poles. The field lines are drawn closer together around the poles to indicate that is where the magnetic field is strongest.
