Students, If you have been around me at all, you should know that I can find science all around. So I thought that I would give you some ideas to help you figure out where science is around you!
Ways to dork out:
Hang out with me
Listen to Science Songs
Read Simon Basher Books
Watch Good Eats
Watch Mythbusters
More will be coming....

Well, I definitely was able to experience some life science this week when I cut myself in class. When I initially cut myself, I didn't really feel anything. I honestly didn't think that it was that bad. There was quite a bit of blood coming out of the wound because I have severed many small blood vessels - called capillaries. Have you ever wondered why blood is always red when you cut yourself? It's because it is exposed to the Oxygen in the air so that what you see is the bright red or oxygenated blood (that is blood that is carrying oxygen). At the nurses office, they applied pressure on the wound to help stop the bleeding as that encourages the blood to start clotting. They suggested I go to the doctor and get it checked out. At the doctors office they knew that they needed to stitch it up because I had cut through all of the layers of skin and there was some pieces hanging out. By stiching up the wound, it helps keep bacteria out. It also helps healing. Right now my skin and blood cells are undergoing a lot of mitosis as they try to "bridge the gap" if you will. By stitching them close together the cells on either side of the wound will meet faster.
