Week 20:
Whenever I see color in someone’s hair, I always feel happy to see such expressive styles. Believe it or not, the process of putting color in someone’s hair is very scientific. First one has to bleach their hair, which will turn the color of the hair lighter. Once the desired shade is acquired, the color is applied which will turn the hair that color over a period of time. The process is like staining specimen for inspection.

Week 19:
2 years ago I got really caught up in the whole back masking phase, needless to say after a whole day of research I was scared out of my mind for 3 whole weeks when trying to get to sleep. I decided to pick it back up this year for whatever reason and found that the subject is highly scientific. Back masking is highly incorporated with satanic messages, however artists everywhere have parodied the ‘subliminal messages’ some are used for the sole purpose of image, and some are completely unintentional. However, Back Masking works when a part of a song that is originally played forward, is reversed, totally reversing the sound waves and sometime a message can be heard. This subject has to do with the manipulation of sound and it’s soundwaves.

Above is a sample of Backmasking. The original song is by Mindless Self Indulgence, who makes fun of everything. The song "Backmasking" came off their album "Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy" Intentionally, the band included motherly messages when the song is played backwards.

"Don't listen to this song... Clean your room. Do your homework. Don't stay out too late. Eat your vegetables. Put away your toys. Don't sit too close to the TV. Get dressed for church."

Week 18:
4th of July is my favorite holiday of all time. I like lighting up the fuses and watching the pretty colors dance across the sky. I wonder what causes the different patterns in the sky, and after a bit of research, I find out that the answer is gunpowder. Originally made in China, gunpowder is a mixture that has a reaction when in contact with heat. In this case, exploding, different minerals like copper have been added to fireworks over the years to change the outcome of different colors. The result is beautiful.

Week 17:
Sometimes in my house, things can get busy for my dad so he doesn’t have time to cook us anything if we’re hungry, so he buys a lot of instant stuff. The other day my dad got a big package of instant noodles from Costco. When I’m “cooking” the noodles, I can help but wonder how they start off as crunchy to real noodles. The secret is in the steamy water, when a solid comes in contact with heat energy, the object starts to change form. The noodles are not liquid after cooking, but the figure moves more freely than a block of noodles.

Week 16:
I just stared at my Sasuke piggy bank, and remembered why I bought it. His face looks super weird and I couldn’t resist. However this isn’t manufactured, it was hand crafted by a guy in the Federal Way mall. I would imagine the process would’ve been difficult because he had to melt the wax into the mold and manage to paint the figure correctly (which he didn’t by the way). All of these components made my piggy bank that looks like it’s about to murder me with its crooked knife.

Week 15:
I’m staying up way too late to be doing these blogs! I swear! Oh sleep, there’s a scientific topic! *desperate*
I noticed that when I don’t get to bed early, my body requires more rest so when the time comes where my alarms ring, I can’t hear it, my body is too tired. However if I get to bed before 10 or so, my schedule is almost always alright so I can be up and ready.

Week 14:
I have a habit of playing with lighters, which means I like to light candles I suppose! Today I wondered what would happen if I lit a candle that was almost down to its wick. The result was that a small blob of fire emitted, instead of burning outwards, the heat was so close that it melted the wax under the wick holder and I could move the bottom anywhere in the candle case.

Week 13:
My mom and I went on a really long walk, and the trail was majorly steep, however on our walk we encountered 3 garden snakes. My mom freaks out at every one, but she’s very aware so she saved me when I almost stepped on one of the creatures. I noticed however, that the snakes only appear in certain areas of the trail. In sunny, rocky areas the snakes would be basking in the warmth, however in the shady forest areas they would not be in sight. This is because Snakes are cold-blooded thus meaning they must soak up as much warmth as they can.

Week 12:
Since I’m in our school’s choir, I wanted to know how voices sync within themselves to create a rich sound. First off, every sound has to be on tune, in order to create a correct sound. I thought the concept was very similar to the way gears worked, if one gear was not rotating properly, then the rest of the gears will work improperly.

Week 11:
Tonight I stared at my Hangry & Angry poster on my wall, and I wondered how different products get different results. I started to look into hair products and found that the chemicals and found out that Hair is made out of dead cells, cells are made of protein, there for our hair is just protein. No hair products could actually strengthen your hair, but actually just coat it to give the appearance of healthy hair. Spiking products are just chemicals that holds your strands in place!!

Week 10:
Hooray for double digits, Now onto our topic! I was visiting with my mom, and she made some juice from a frozen can. I started to wonder how that works. Hard concentrated juice is made and frozen, shipped to stores everywhere. When my mom unpackaged it, she poured the frozen chunks into the pitcher and added water to mix well. This made a compound mixture, where the juice looked like one solid ingredient.

Week 9:
I was watching Bounty Hunters today and there was this scene where a person was shot in the wear-house, when the camera was focused on the man, I obviously saw blood stains, but it intrigued me. How did Blood stains manage to travel everywhere with little effort? My answer would be based on the properties of the damage. Say someone shoots you in the shoulder, depending on the bullet, an entry wound would be created, which would excrete blood, as well as the exit wound which most of the blood would be forced out. The blood would splatter and stain your clothes as more pours out of your wound. As you can see, blood sheds very easily, which means that since there is a quantity of it, there can be more to pass around.

Week 8:
So today I started carving in my door with an Exacto knife, as I carved each letter of my friend’s name I noticed a scientific relation. When my knife came in contact with the wood, traces of shavings were left behind; however they didn’t fall straight down, rather they twirled around when they fell to the floor. Why I think this occurred is because the flow of air spirals everywhere, considering the air from under my door could’ve swept the shavings up.

Week 7:
The majority of music I listen to is electronic/rave music. I can’t get enough of it! I’m a rave fanatic (no, I don’t go there for the drugs) and one major component of raving is GLOWSTICKS~! Believe it or not, Glow sticks are probably the most scientific invention I’ll talk about! Glow sticks do not require an energy or battery source to light. There is a plastic tube that holds all the liquids in, inside the tube are phenyl, oxalate, ester, and fluorescent dye. Inside this mixture is a glass tube that holds other chemicals called hydrogen peroxide, and a phthalate ester solvent which when broke, mixes with each other causing a chemical reaction. Lights emit from within the tube and thus a light that doesn’t use any source is formed!!

Week 6:
I guarantee you that the one thing I won’t leave the house without is Makeup. For me, it’s a way of being who I want to be, painting on a face that you want and shows other people how you show yourself. How does makeup work? Why is it that I can leave the house with this mysterious compound on my face and call myself beautiful? What companies do is they gather up these natural materials and ingredients, then they add pigments to them to create the desired color. One major component in most cosmetics is wax, this helps the coating on the face go smoother and stay longer, they mix the components at a rapid speed to break down the oils and waxes into small particles. All products are tested for purity before being released on the market. I believe this is scientific because the way the ingredients work hand in hand create a mixture that can be used as a resource.

Week 5:
People should know by now that I’m an avid Britney Spears fan. In fact, I’m wearing her “Fantasy” fragrance right now. I can’t help but wonder how they would design a scent specific for Britney Spears products. First, the design and ingredients must be measured and planned out before the oils are extracted from them, then they blend all the scents within each other with alcohol and water. The process is fairly scientific because the process must be repeated and done to the last detail in order for a successful scent to result.

Week 4:
Many people don’t know, but I am a very big dance fan. I love dancing, all forms of it. My favorite however is Japanese routines. All the dancers are perfectly synced with each other, and it makes me wonder how the bodies can sync with the music to the point where they seem like carbon copies. My theory is that when the dancers hear the rhythm of the music, they have an urge to move, especially good music. Think of our bodies like a conductor and the music is built up energy, when that energy passes through our bodies; we want to dance, thus resulting in movement. Choreographers can time their movements with the music, which can result in a successful dance sequence.

Week 3:
So my friends and I were in Seattle last week, and we came across a Purikura booth in Game works. Us being the camera-hogs and rabid-cute fans that we are, we decided to give it a shot. So we gave the cashier our money and headed straight for the photo booth! For those of you that don’t know, Purikura is a photo-sticker vending machine; you take pictures with your choice of different backdrops, you edit the photos, then you choose the print size!! As we blew money like no tomorrow on tiny, tiny photos, I thought of something. How does this machine print the pictures so nicely? The ink doesn’t run and it’s certainly a very precise shot. I thought that the process was very similar to how a printer works. The camera lens recognized the shot and at the given moment will take the picture, digitally; the picture will be printed on a photo sheet when given the measurements the user chooses.

Week 1:
When it comes to music, I have a wide expansion of things I enjoy listening too. One of the main things I like to listen to however would be Vocaloid music. Vocaloid is a program that allows a user to generate artificial singing. To operate this program, one must type in the lyrics and adjust the pitch. It also requires you to edit frequency and amplitude. This is scientific because this program is relevant to the subject of sound.
Take a listen!
