I see science all around me in the world. Cars zooming by creating friction with the ground. I see raindrops falling down from the clouds and splattering on the ground, because of the force of gravity. I also think about forces; pushes and pulls when im playing sports. I see levers and simple machines all around me. There are also many actions and reactions going on around us. Like a basketbal being droped and then bouncing back up into the palm of your hand.
January 15, 2010- Friction
Over winter break i thought a lot about friction. I went to a indoor waterpark and thought about friction as i went down the slides. The slides water seemed to create less friction as you slid down, so you could go fast. Over winter break i also went ice skating. The ice was almost a frictionless surface. You were able to slip and slide everywhere. It was a lot fun.
January 19, 2010-Food
When i was eating dinner last night i really thought about what i was putting in my body. I thought about the carbohydrates that i was consuming and how they would later be burnt up well i was running or working out. i started to think about how my healthy diet is a part of my preperation for sports. I rembered how important food is, and how big of an energy source it can be. Water keeps you hydrated and moving, which is why you need to drink lots of it. when i consume things such as nuts, lean meat, beans, fish, and eggs i am getting the protein i need to build muscle in my body.
January 22, 2010-Surfing
Over the summer i went to the island of Maui, which is in Hawaii. Well i was there i did a lot of fun things. One of the things i did was go surfing. Remembering surfing, it now makes me think a little bit more about science. I think about the bouyancy of the surfboard and how i was able to stand up and balance on it as i rode the wave. Also about the kinetic energy the surfboard has as im riding and cutting through the wave. I also went snorkeling over the trip and got to examine the under water biome of the coral reefs. I saw many of interesting fih and creatures. I even got the oppertunity to swim with white tip reef sharks, sea turtles, eels, and even dolphins. It was a great scientific expierence.
January 29, 2010-Trampoline
I recently went to a place called sky high in Bellvue. They have trampolines all over the walls and floor. This made me think about science. It made me think a lot about gravity and how much higher i couldn jump with the help of the trampolines. I thought about the potential energy i had before i was going to launch my self into the air from the trampoline. I also thought about the kinetic energy i had as i was flipping through the air.
Febuary 4, 2010 - Go-Karts
This last weekend i went go-karting. This made me think about science and start to notice more scientific things that were going on. I noticed that there was rolling friction between the wheels of the go-kart and the pavement. I also thought about my speed and acceleration. There was friction going on between the brakes and the wheels as well. Pressing on the brake and creating friction would slow the kart down. I also noticed the kinetic energy i was gaining as i went faster and faster.
February 11, 2010 - Snowboarding
This weekend i went snowboarding. It was a lot of fun. Snowboading can be related to science in many different ways. When i was at the top of the mountain i had a lot of potential energy. As i was going down the mountain i had kinetic energy. I also thought about the friction, which there was not a whole lot of between my snowboard and the snow. I thought about how if you wax your board it creates less friction and you are able to go faster and have more kinetic energy. Gravity is also part of science that plays a big role in snowboarding. Especially when your going off a jump. I had a great time this last weekend snowboarding and thinking about everyday science.
February 22, 2010- Hockey
This weekend i was watching Olympic hockey. While watching hockey i started to think about science. I thought about why the players could move so fast on the ice. I figured they could do this because there is not much friction between the blades of their skates and the ice. I also thought about the inertia of the hockey puck. The puck would stay in motion after a player had hit it until another player stopped the puck or hit it in another direction. Another thing i thought about was the ice that they were playing on and how the molecules of the ice were packed together and barely moving.
February 22, 2010- Skate Park
Yesterday i went to the skate park with my bmx bike. After i was done riding i thought about the science that had been going on. I thought about the rolling friction between the wheels of my bike and the ground. I also thought about the amounts of speed and momentum i needed to go over different objects and to do different tricks. The skate park was mostly made out of concrete, which is a solid. That meant that the molecules of the skate park were mostly packed tightly together and barely moving. I had a very fun time and the skate park.
February 23, 2010- simple machines
Today i have been noticing a lot of simple machines. I noticed a wheel and axle as i turned the door knob to open a door today. I also thought about all the different gears a clock has. When i walked up the stairs today i noticed that i was walking up an inclined plane. Anthother simple machine i notice today was a pulley. At the gym they have many pulleys on the workout machines that lift the weight.
March 4, 2010-Electricity
This week i have been noticing all the electricity around me. Everywhere i look there always seems to be something that uses electricity. Many items in my house use elctricity. Such as the microwave, toaster, oven, TV, and other devices. I also have been trying to identifty forms of static and current electricity. Ive been trying to notice materials that are conductors and insalators.
March 11, 2010- Water
Yesterday i was drinking a glass of water and it made me think about what i was drinking and what it had been through. I thought about the molecules in the water. The molecules in the water were packed loosely together and moving around, because water is a liquid. The water i was drinking had been through a whole cycle. The water cycle, and maybe a numerousamount of times. The water had been through evaperation, condensation, precipitation, and then finally collection. Those are the basic steps of the water cycle.
March 19, 2010- wheel and axle
This week i have been noticing a lot of wheel and axles. A wheel and axle is a simple machine. I saw a wheel and axle on cars as the wheels. I have been seeing them everywhere and in all different sizes. Whenever i open a door, im rotating a wheel and axle which is the doorknob. Another wheel and axle i have seen is the wheel on wheel barrow, and even on a toy car. Without the simple machine of a wheel and axle, life would be suprisingly a lot harder.
March 25, 2010- Waves
This week in science class we have been learning about waves. I've been thinking about what type of waves are in the real world. When i think about it, it seems that they are always all around me. Since im using hearing some type of noise or sound, my ear drums are picking up sound waves coming from different directions. I hear sound waves from the T.V, and computer. I wonder what type of many particles there are in the waves. I also think about if the waves i am hearing are transverse or longitudinal.
April 2, 2010- Science Article
Yesterday i was reading some cool science articles and found some cool real world science facts. One thing i found interesting that i read was that the bones in a childrens body fuse together as they grow up to become an adult. That is why only 206 bones are found in the adult human body, and 300 in children. Another crazy thing i read was that The most dangerous animal in the world is suprisingly the common housefly. because of their habits of visiting animal waste, they transmit more diseases than any other animal. did you know that The human eye blinks an average of 4,200,000 times a year? Its all pretty interesting!
April 09, 2010- Macaroni
Last night i was making some macaroni and cheese for dinner. I first heated the water until it came to a boil and then put the macaroni in. When i put the macaroni in, i notices that the macaroni was being lifted up by the boiling water and then pushed out to the sides. i figured it was doing this because heat rises. The heat was travelng from the burner up through the pot of water, and then into the air. I knew it was traveling up out of the pot because if you were to place your hand above the pot, you would be able to feel a great amount of heat on your hand.
April 15, 2010- Roller coaster
This week i have been thinking about when objects have the most kinetic and potential energy. I saw a roller coaster on t.v. and thought about its kinetic and potential energy. I realized that the roller coaster had the most potential energy when it was at its highest point on the tracks about to zoom down. The roller coaster had the most kinetic energy while it was in the middle of the bottom part of the tracks after it had zoomed down from the highest point of the tracks.
April 23, 2010- fair
This last weekend i went to the Puyallup spring fair. It was a lot of fun, i wen't on many different rides. One of the rides they had there was called the extreme scream. The extreme scream is pretty much a huge tower that has seats on the side. The machine lifts you really fast up to the top and then pulls you all the way down. The sign by the ride said it was 1g going up and 3g's going down. I thought it was really cool that i got to experience that gravitational force. Well the ride was lifting me up to the top super fast, i felt a little like i was floating, As the ride pulled me down i was actually up out of my seat. It was so much fun that i went on the ride 4 times in a row.
April 29, 2010- Dentist
A couple of days ago i had to go to a dentist apointment. Well i was there they had to use a drill on my teeth to help smoothen and file my teeth down. I figured that the drill was able to file and smoothen my teeth because of friction. The spinning top of the drill was creating friction with my teeth which would file and smoothen them. The faster the drill got spinning the hotter my teeth became because of the friction. The dentist would then squirt a little water on my teeth. Wherever there is friction, there is often heat.
May 7, 2010- Music
Playing guitar is one of my hobby's that i really enjoy. Well i was playing i started thinking about how the acoustic guitar strings worked. Whats the scientific difference with different guitar strings? i looked it up and found some interesting information. I found that the pitch of a vibrating string depends on four things. The mass of the string: bigger strings vibrate more slowly. The tension in the string using the tuning pegs: tighter strings gives higher sounding pitch. length of the string that is free to vibrate, shortening the string by pressing down on the fret board gives it a higher pitch. Finally, there is the Mode of viabration. <------- My guitar!!
May 21, 2010-Birds
Today i saw science in the real world well i was outside. I was just on my trampoline when i looked up in the sky and saw some birds flying around. I started to think about how amazing it was that the birds could fly. I figured it was because how light they are, and how big there wings are. Air currents fly under there wings. Eagles go over hot air pockets to increase there alttitude.
May 28, 2010-Sky high
A couple days ago i went to a place called sky high. Sky high is a place with a lot of science going on. You can launch yourself up into the air and do flips by bouncing off of the trampolines that are surrounding you. Sky high has a ton of trampolines all over the floor. They even have trampolines that are placed on the walls at an angle so you can do flips off of them. Another really fun feature of sky high is the foam pit. You can launch yourself off one of the trampolines and into the foam pit, and you won't get hurt because the foam absorbs your fall.
June 4th, 2010- Science expierement
This week me and my group will be conductiing our science expierement. We will be using a hard boiled egg, a milk bottle, a piece of paper, and a match. It should be very interesting. We are going to try and get the egg inside the mlk bottle by using science and only the materials listed. We will light the piece of paper on fire and drop into the bottle. We will then quickly put the egg on top of the bottle. When the flame goes out, the egg should pop right in.
First Entry.
