Kid Friendly Definition: The distance an object travels in a specified direction during a unit of time.

Example of Veloctiy:

If you are driving your car northbound at a constant speed of 60 mph on a highway, the velocity of your car is 60 mph N and your acceleration is 0. The acceleration is 0 miles per second squared because the speed of the object is constant. So your total velocity is 60 mph N. The N stands for the direction, which in this case is North. If you approach a red light, once you start to hit the break, your car starts to decelerate and your velocity slowly goes down to 0 mph N.

Velocity is speed plus a direction. Let me give you another example. Let's say that an athlete is running at 15 mph. 15 mph is that athlete's speed. Now let's say that the athlete was running towards the easterly direction. That athlete's velocity would be 15 mph E, in which the E stands for the direction east.

Another example of velocity would be wind velocity. Wind velocity is measured by means of an anemometer or radar. The oldest of these is the cup anemometer, an instrument with three or four small hollow metal hemispheres set so that they catch the wind and revolve about a vertical rod; an electrical device records the revolutions of the cups and thus the wind speed. The direction of wind is usually indicated by a thin strip of wood, metal, or plastic (often in the shape of an arrow or a rooster) called a weather vane that is free to rotate in a horizontal plane. When the wind blows, the arrow points to the direction of the wind and thus the anemometer measures the wind velocity.
