12/17/09
In the mornings when I work out at school I notice balanced and unbalance forces at work. The forces that are their are gravity, the weights and when I lift them. When i bench press the weights going down on my shoulders is one force and my arms pushing up are the other force. But the weights have a stronger force then my arm strength. So that is the unbalance and balance force i see in the morning.
1/7/09 Sliding Friction.
Is what I experienced when I went Ice skating during winter break. Out of all surfaces that contain friction Ice is one that is closest to having no friction. There is still friction since you slow down and stop after sliding on the ice. But I noticed when I started to move that it was easier to move since there is only a little bit of friction between the ice and the blades on my skates. Also when I tried to stop I didn't stop right away, when I stopped I still moved a few distances. The other way I stopped moving when I was skating was when I fell, when I slipped the two surfaces were no longer touching and a new force sent me down on the ground. Second way I stopped was when I crashed into the walls. It was like the law of enertia I was a object that was at motion and then unbalanced force came and stopped my movment.P.S the unbalanced for was the wall.
1/13/10 Inertia
When I am building different stunts for my skate park and I test it with the marble skater Inertia moves the marble skater through the course. The law of Inertia is that if a object at rest will stay at rest unless a equal or stronger forces acts upon it, and it also applies to objects at motion. When the marble-skater rolls down the chute and goes up the quarter pipe the momentume pushes the marle skater up the quater pipe. While frictiona and gravity work together to pull the marble skater down the chute and up a quarter pipe.
1/21/10 The water Cycle
Rain is very important to any ecosystem on earth. The reason why is because it helps plants grow and give water to animals. Water is important to animals and plants and in some places rain is the only way animals and plants get water. But rain doesn't just magicly go into the air and rain down on the land, there is a cycle that happens to the water. Most water comes from the ocean and water that is on the land eventually makes its way back to the ocean whether from rivers or clouds. The water cycle is just many phases that water turns into and that never ends. First water evaporates from the ocean or from the ground, then it turns into clouds which is a gas then when it gets heavy enough rains down into the Earth. Then it starts over from the first step.
1/25/10 Energy
There are many types of energy in the worls that fuel different types of objects. For humans our energy are food and sleep. It's hard to live and survive without either of the two. Since sleep recharges our body and mind at night since we used alot of energy that day. But food is what keeps the person alive and fuels their body to survive during the day. So those two types of energy go hand in hand but how food gives us energy is more complicated than just eating food and feeling stronger. The human body is a very complicated and complex structure, there are many systems and layers that make up the human body. How we transform food into energy goes to the digestive system.
2/2/10 Reflexes
Have you ever wonder why sometimes somebody throws a object at you and you are completely unaware of it but you still manage to catch it without thinking about it. That is what we call reflexes but its scientific name is called muscle memory, muscle memory is something that we cannot learn in a short period of time and it depends on how good you practice an action for your reflex to be as good as you want them to be. Many athletes develope muscle memory through the sport they are playing and sometimes use it as an advantage in the sport. The reason muscle memory developes is because if the body practices a specific motion several times and often enough the body will automatically do the action without the brain telling the body to do the action.
2/11/10 Gravity
The gravity does just not affect the living organisms but also the non living organisms in the planet but also the entire universe. For example the non living organisms that are affected by gravity is the oceans. What controls the oceans movements on Earth is the Moon's gravity, when the moon moves to one side of the planet that portion of the ocean on Earth rises while the other side lowers down its level. So for the oceans rule for gravity which ever part of it is at day has lower level of water than the part of the ocean that is at night. Atoms
The world is made up of little tiny balls that come together to make something bigger. But each type of ball has a different number that make up something different. But each of those molecules can make up either a solid, liquid and gas. Sometimes even plasma if there is enough heat energy in the molecule. But sometimes if there is no heat molecules go into its opposite way of order. It starts from plasma-gas-liquid-solid those are what happens when heat energy is taken away from molecules. 2-26-10 Simple Machines
I see simple machines everyday its jsut crazy. When you think of simple machines you think of incline planes, screws wedges, etc. But what people dont usually see is the simple machines that make up some complex machines that are called compound machines. For example a door is a compound machine. The hindges are on one side of the door and attacted to a wall are like wheel and axle. They might not look like an ordinary wheel and axle but they are. The wheel is hollowed out and the axle runs through them. Which is how the door is able to open and close. 3-4-10 Plants
Usually people know that plants need carbon, water and sun to grow but it turns out one of those variables some plants can grow. What that variable is... is sunlight. In my first period class were doing a lab about different variables that affect the way a seed grows. My manipulated variable that I changed for my plants was lighting. There are 3 plants one is normal sunlight the second is artificial light and the third is no light. Right now the normal sunlight isn't growing but the second and third one is. But the 3 plant gets no light except when my group is gathering data. That is shows that plants can survive with very little light. 3-8-10 The Wheel
Most people when they here the word wheel know that it is one of human kinds greatest invention and that its a shape that is used in alot of object to make them move. What they dont really think about is how it works and why it rolls so smoothly. A wheel is a circular shape that varies in sizes and the reason why it rolls smoothly is because its surface is curved. Most polygons that have sides that are flat have trouble rolling because of their surfaces, the surface of the polygon and the ground is sometimes flat and symetrical which makes them lock just like a jigsaw piece which is why they have trouble moving on the surface of the ground. A circles surface is uneven which makes the circle unbalance which rocks it back and fourth, also since the the surface is a not flat it will roll on the surface and wont lock in with the surface of the ground. 3-15-10 Space
People have always wondered what lay past the clouds in the skies and where do the stars lay at night. Not until last centuary that man was first able to answer this question about space. It's name says it all Space black, endless and filled with stars and planets bundled together in gallexies to form the universe. In July 16,1969 the Apollo 11 project was a success, the rocket ship was able to leave Earth's atmosphere and landed on the moon on July 20,1969. This historic event showed what lay outside beyond the clouds and skies of the Earth and welcoming to humankind to the domain of night and stars. After the U.S expedition to the moon many other countries wanted to do their own launch to space. Now in the modern era of 2010 many satiltes orbit around the Earth serving many purposes both public and governmental types of jobs. 3-23-10 Windshields
This observation has always interested me because in different seasons the feel of it changes. For example in the winter time the windshield of a car is colder than the temperature outside. This happens because of the molecules of the windshield, since it is not a very dense material and the inside of it has compressed air in it. So when the temperature changes outside the windshield also changes but it is usually lower or higher depending on the temperature. Like in the summer its hot but if you touch the windshield of a car it hurts because it is so hot. 3-29-10 Waves
When people think of waves they think of the ocean, that is a wave but that is only one type of waves. There are two types of waves one is transverse, these waves are the ones we are usually used to see for example waves on the water, ripples of water waves if a object drops on a body of water and seismic waves which are earth quakes. These waves are energy that travel up and down making a wave and these transvere waves use a medium to move their energy around. But there is another kind of waves called longitudinal waves which does not use a medium to move its energy. These waves are light and radio waves, they are still waves but there was do not go thorugh a medium and make that pattern that usually appears when energy is transfered. Instead their waves move in a direct direction and spreads out as it goes out farther. 4-8-10 HeadPhones
This week what I saw as about headphones and how they work. The way it looks seem simple two pieces go to your ear while the other end goes to a outlet of a stero or computer and then you hear sounds. But how it really works is the same way as speakers through magnatism, which turns electrical energy into sound energy. With computers when students like me listen to music the energy from the computer is transfered into electrical energy which travels into the and then when it reaches the two end ear pieces will turn back into sound energy and into our ears. 4-14-10 Thermal Imaging
There are many types of eyes that see the world in different ways. Most animals (inclueding humans) see the electromagneticlight specturm and their eyes collect the different amounts of light travelling from the sun to the earth. But some animals that live most in the dark have learned to adapt and change their eyes so that they can live easier in their enviornment. Our eyes if they see in the dark have trouble seeing objects since in the dark all we see is black and some objects have a little lighter shade but our brain still cant tell fully what it is. Animals that have thermal imaging their eyes can see the heat energy that is going off in our body and that is how they can tell their surrounding in the dark and what is living. 4-19-10 Stars at night
When people talk about stars most people think its about those famous people who stars in movies but the stars I'm talking about live up in the sky and are only visble at night. During a couple of units of astronomy in elementary I learned that stars come in all shapes and sizes also that not all of them glow brightly. Some stars are dead and that their gases are released into that make these clouds of gases, While some are still in its sphere like glowing form but instead of glowing red or orange glows blue. But another interesting thing is that some stars are so far away from us that it takes 1000 year or 1 light-year for their light to reach us. So by the time the light reaches us the star might be gone by that time and that some suns are so huge that compared to our sun the sun doesn't even look visible enought for us to see. 4-26-10 Gravity of Planets
When I think about gravity the first thing in my mind that pops in is the Earth's gravity keeping us in place on its surface. Then I thought to myself if the earth has its own gravity shouldn't other planets and celestial objects have gravity of its own? Turns out that they do have their own gravity from the biggest object in our solar system which has the gravity of 12.4million miles to one of the smallest like Earth's moon has its own gravity which may not seem noticable. But if we look at the seas and the direction of the moon we see that the tides of the ocean go with the moon which gives us high and low tides in the coasts. 5-3-10 Lightning
Since the begining of mankind when people saw dark clouds in the sky they knew in their instincts that a storm is coming. Once the storm begins a bright flash of light occurs and from a distance a root of light strikes the earth. Then a huge roaring sound is heard throughout the area, this is known as thunder which makes those scary sounds that echo to far distances and lighting is the root like light that strikes the ground before lighting. People thought back then if there were storms was that the thunder god of which ever culture was angry and was letting his powers loose on the world. Now however we know the real reason why lighting and thunder happen during storms. When clouds come together and build up their mass friction occurs with clouds and that friction builds up electrons and all that space in the clouds build positive and negative electrons that come together to make a single high voltage charge of electricity. Once this energy is released through a single burst we get lighting. 5-10-10 Thermal Heat
Many people before thought that all life needed sunlight to live and grow, which was proven due to many experiments in the past. But in the year of 1977 a scientist named Jack Corliss changed all that when he and other scientists explored the depths of the sea thinking that they were going to see nothing but rocks and darkness, turns out they were completly wrong. Volcanic vents sometimes escape the inside of the Earth and the heat is released into the ocean, the magma is cooled by the water but the heat still remains and so does some of the chemicals left behind before the change. This heat allowed some animals to grow from the heat of the vents and the bacteria that the vents were making and due to the lack of predators of the new organisms the animals were thriving unless the heat vent closed. 5-25-10 Cars
When most kids and teenagers think about cars they know its a moving box wtih wheels that your parents operate to take the family places. But what they usually don't think about is how it does all that in the first place. A vehicle no matter what type cars, suvs, trucks, etc all work in the same way they are just designed differently to go through certain obsticles. The vehicle is broken down into different systems like the human body its systems are the frame which is the axels that connect the wheels and where in the front the engine is kept. Next is the fueling system which is where the gas tank, engine, battery, etc is connected so that the car has energy to move. Next is the system that controls the cars movements like the body's nervous system, this systems is the steeing wheel, gas, break pedals are. Last is the body and interior where we sit in and the outside protects us. 6-2-10 Electronics
Today Alex Hand gave a speech in humanities about his topic which was electronics. He told us that even though the laungage of it looks complicated it was interesting and challenging. Also that electronics are the way of manipulating electrons and different types of elements are used for different types of electronics. Also the way things are wired to make the electronics work is broken down into 4 different parts and that each type of electronic falls into one of these categoreys.
